Moving into new space?

7/2009: Do you know anyone who’s moving into a smaller space?

In this economic climate, most organizations are trying to do more with less. How much you are spending on your commercial space could be significantly reduced.

Here’s what you can do if you are trying to cut your space costs.

  • Get out from under costly lease payments. Consider early lease renegotiation or renewal. It can earn you substantial savings in rent payments or could include an improvement allowance.

  • Decrease your office footprint. Downsizing is one of the best ways to cut costs. By moving from an oversized office space to one that is smaller, you save on lease and energy expenses. You can then find ways to operate more effectively in a smaller space.

  • Get more out of the space you have. Identify ways to create new space efficiencies and improve energy savings. Transfer paper files to electronic media to save on square footage use of filing cabinets. Switch to energy-efficient lighting and windows to cut down energy expenses.

  • Renovate. If your space needs expansion, consider renovating the existing office building rather than building new or relocating. The overall project could save you a bundle, and it offers you the ability to assess your systems and facilities to maximize energy-efficiencies and longevity.

  • Consider a virtual office space. By renting office commodities on an “as-you-need” basis, an organization with just a few employees can save money. Many virtual office providers offer personal phone answering services, a mailing address and access to conference rooms.
